Ernest W. Ryan Home Movies Collection
Scope and Contents
Filmed by Ernest W. Ryan between 1956 and 1958, these silent videos depict moments of daily life and special occasions of the Ryan family around Maryland. While they mostly take place in Arbutus and West Baltimore, there is also footage of Ocean City, Maryland and The Peter Pan Inn in Urbana, Maryland. Also of interest is the footage of the newly built Bay Bridge when it was just a single span, and Baltimore’s Fort McHenry.
Other videos show two separate family weddings, one of which was the 1956 marriage of the donor’s parents, Charles and Nancy Garrett. The other wedding video shows the donor’s Uncle - the wedding of Bill and Delores Ryan. The receptions take place at Casablanca, a jazz club in Liberty Heights, and footage shows the Zim Zemarel band, a large swing band popular for weddings in the Baltimore area.
Other footage shows the donor, Susan Hebble, as a toddler as well as at her christening at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Catonsville, Maryland. There is also a scene of the donor’s uncle in military uniform visiting the family home while on leave.
