Schreter joined his father’s industry in 1936, eventually inheriting the company and greatly expanding its operations across the United States, before selling the business in 1991. Schreter married his wife Phyllis Kolker (1922-2015) on February 1st, 1942. Members of the Explorers Club, both Schreter and Kolker were avid travellers and their trips are documented extensively in Schreter’s films. The pair had two children; Robert Kolker Schreter (born 1945) and Carol Ann Schreter (born 1947). Together, Robert and Carol are heavily featured in their father’s films. Schreter was also an avid art collector and jewellery maker. He gathered art pieces, rocks for his jewellery, as well as ideas for innovative tie patterns during his travels. Active in his community, Schreter was also a founding member of the Beth Jacob Congregation in 1938 and acted on the boards of the Associated Jewish Charities, the Jewish Family and Children’s Services, and the B’nai Brith Abraham Schreter Lodge.
