Scope and Contents

In 1965, WJZ-TV produced “What Is A Baltimorean?”, a 30-minute “Maryland Heritage Series” directed by Jack Hunter, written by Gwinn Owens, and narrated by Jerry Turner. It was described in the Baltimore Sun archive as a "light-hearted look at the Baltimore character."

MARMIA possesses production elements and not the entire completed documentary.

Existence and Location of Copies

WJZ submitted a copy of the completed documentary on 2″ quad video tape to the Peabody Awards for consideration. MARMIA requested that copy be digitized in 2022 and it is now available thanks to the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia.

Processing Information

Both soundtracks were found with vinegar syndrome and were sent to an external vendor for remediation and digitization. The "Music and Effects" soundtrack was digitally enhanced with noise reduction and wow and flutter to address audio errors. The soundtracks are full length copies of what was used in the documentary.

The "Picture (mag) and pix overs" reel contains production elements and outtakes of the documentary.
